British Bacon Rolls

So here’s the thing. The Brits get a lot of flack for ‘tasteless’ food. But after two years living there and nearly a decade in a relationship with an Englishman, I’m here to tell you that this is entirely a falsehood. From curries to roast dinners, British cuisine is some of the best in the world.

Case in point: can you imagine anything more decadent and tasty than melty sharp cheddar cheese wrapped in crispy bacon?

I first experienced British bacon rolls, made with what the Brits term as “streaky” bacon (us Americans just call it bacon) and super sharp cheddar, at the first Christmas I spent at James’s parents house.

James’s step-mum pulled out a fancy Marks & Spencer package (trust me, anything from M&S is super posh) and proceeded to bake them off. The smell alone was enough to have me salivating while I sat on the couch, but biting into a hot Bacon Roll for the first time was kinda life changing.

British Bacon Rolls are a perfectly indulgent way to send off 2012. Before we plan our new work out routines and healthy eating plans, one last hurrah to the beauty of the holiday season.

Whether you serve them as a party hors d’oeuvre or just for the family as a quiet ringing in for the new year, I think you’re going to love every British bite.

Happy New Year, from our house to yours!

Happy New Year, Jen! I tried making them once without freezing the cheese, and it did not go well.

I’m not going to let Phil see this because I think he’d start requesting it daily. And I like how you give suggestions for leftovers like there would actually be some! :-)

Amber December 30, 2012 at 10:20 PM

Hehe, Nicole – we actually did have leftovers, but that’s because I made them at breakfast time, and we were both like WHOA BACON AND CHEESE TOO MUCH. But I’m thinking about chopping them up tomorrow to toss into a potato hash with some scrambled eggs on the side.

Two of some of my faves thing to eat. Extra sharp cheddar and bacon. I will have to try this when we get our new fridge. It died on Christmas Eve. Happy New Year to you and James.

Always happens at the worst times, doesn’t it, Bonnie? I hope you’re enjoying your new fridge by now, and a happy 2013!

So far, good. :) My vegetables don’t freeze anymore. No frosting on the back of the fridge. The old fridge was a lemon. I’ve been wanting to replace it. My husband had to agree to a new fridge when the old one died. I’m happy now.

Holy cow!! Melty cheese wrapped in crispy bacon?!? YES PLEASE! Those sound amazing. Two of my favorite things completely unadulterated. Love! Happy New Year :)

Haha! Unadulterated snacks. We should write a book called that. Happy New Year, Kate!

Ok. My stomach is growling. Cheese and bacon? What could possibly be better than that…besides chocolate. But not together. Happy New Year, Amber!

Amber January 7, 2013 at 12:03 PM

Well, I’ve had chocolate dipped bacon, and it was pretty awesome. It might work if you did it with a less strong cheese.. but anyway.. ha! Happy New Year, Katie. It’s nice to see you around.

Oh my… Darron would go nuts for these. They might have to make an appearance for the Super Bowl at my house. :)
